Environmental Action for 2030

We promote the reduction of environmental impact for co-prosperity with a sustainable society.
Actions are based on guidelines in each of the six areas, from production to disposal.

Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions

We will promote a phased reduction plan with a target of 50% renewable energy use by 2030.
We have contracted PPA(Power Purchase Agreement) and started the solar power generation at our distribution center in Niigata. This solar power is also supplied to the Tokyo Head office and Fukuoka Branch to promote further reduction of environmental impact.

Recycling of factory waste

We will increase the ratio and level of recycling of factory waste and promote visualization and recycling in order to contribute to a recycling-oriented society.

Product packaging materials

We will switch to sustainable packaging materials for our main products by 2030.
In FY2022, 79% of new products were switched over.

Product recycling

Starting with products manufactured in-house, we will strengthen our efforts to collect and recycle products.
We will establish a recycling flow in cooperation with partner companies with the target year of 2023.

Low environmental impact of product materials

Based on the core issue [50% reduction of CO2 emissions in the razor industry by 2030], we will formulate an overall plan draft that includes materials, supply chain management, and waste management by the end of FY2023.

Responsible procurement

We will promote CSR procurement and green purchasing toward a sustainable society.
We will request endorsement from suppliers and begin the operation this year.

Setting Goals to Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Report on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from 2019 to 2021 for business establishments.

  • Calculation period April 2019 to March 2022
  • Includes Endo Saijiro Memorial Foundation for Science and Technology
  • In the calculation of GHG emissions, we are cooperating with WasteBox Co.
  • Emission factors for each year are used in the calculation of GHG emissions.

Renewable energy initiatives

Kai Group plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions gradually.
We will promote renewable energy to achieve our goal of a 50% renewable energy ratio by 2030.

Power generation

The distribution center in Niigata has contracted PPA (Power Purchase Agreement) and started solar power generation in June 2023. The solar power is supplied to the distribution center in Niigata, Tokyo head office and Fukuoka branch as renewable energy.

What is PPA
(Power Purchase Agreement)?

Under this agreement, an electric power company provides solar panels to the distribution center in Niigata. Kai purchases the solar power generation to supply to the distribution center and other Kai locations as renewable energy that does not emit CO2.

Use of electricity

Since June 2023, electricity for the Tokyo head office has been changed to solar power generation at the distribution center in Niigata.

Since 2023, electricity for the Fukuoka branch has been also changed to solar power generation at the distribution center in Niigata.

The Kai USA factory, located in the United States, uses electricity generated by hydroelectric power.

Company cars with low environmental impact

Kai Group is gradually replacing company cars with low environmental impact.

Hybrid vehicles
(HV)

Gasoline and diesel vehicles are being replaced with hybrid vehicles (HV).

Electric vehicles
(EV)

Charging facilities and two electric vehicles (EV) have been introduced.

Fuel Cell Vehicles
(FCV)

One fuel cell vehicle (FCV) has been introduced at the Tokyo Head Office.

Initiatives for Resource Recycling manufacturing

Solving Resource Problems and Preventing Global Warming

We view materials, production, sales, use, disposal, collection, sorting, and recycling (resource recovery) as a single chain to facilitate recycling. We also promote the use of recycled materials and biomass materials (carbon-circulating materials).

Reduction of product material environmental impacts

Adoption of Recycled Plastics

The use of recycled plastic reduces the use of new petroleum-based plastic and reduces greenhouse gas emissions.

Global warming, the cause of climate change, is due to an increase in greenhouse gases. One of the causes of the increase in greenhouse gases is that carbon (petroleum) stored underground becomes carbon dioxide (CO₂), a greenhouse gas, when it is released above ground and burned. Reducing the use of plastics made from petroleum will lead to a reduction in the amount of carbon released above the ground, thereby reducing greenhouse gases.

Recycled plastic is a recyclable material made from carbon (plastic) that has already been released above the ground. Since it does not release new underground carbon above the ground, it does not increase the amount of carbon above the ground, making it a material that can be used to reduce greenhouse gases.

素材ベースでバージン材を再生材に置き換えた場合、約80%のCO₂削減になります
Environmental Contribution Element

Using recycled materials reduces the use of materials made from petroleum. Because petroleum (fossil fuel) is made from carbon (C) under the ground, when it is mined and burned, it increases greenhouse gases (CO2) in the atmosphere and causes global warming. On the other hand, recycled plastics are made from carbon that is already in the ground, so it does not increase greenhouse gases (in terms of materials) in the ground and helps prevent global warming.

Use of FSC - certified wood

kiricon Spoon

Environmental Contribution Element

FSC is an international forest management certification. Using the wood from these forests leads to the sustainable conservation of forest resources. It also reduces the use of plastic and help prevent global warming because most other kitchen tool handles are made with plastic.

Use of a Single Material

Environmental Contribution Element

This product is mono materialized for easy material recycling. Many products have a plastic handle, but it is difficult to recycle because the metal and plastic are bonded. On the other hand, products made only of stainless steel are easier to recycle into stainless steel. Also, not using plastic leads to not using petroleum (as for the materials). The energy used in steel manufacturing will be lower CO2. In the future, the environmental impact of stainless steels mono-materials is expected to decrease.

Product packaging materials

Paper Packaging

Environmental Contribution Element

The most common retail packaging is PET blister and PET boxes, which use a lot of plastic. Using paper materials reduces the use of plastic and greenhouse gas emissions and helps prevent global warming.

By using biomass ink made from discarded palm parts, we reduce the use of plastic from petroleum and help prevent global warming.

Items made with FSC-certified paper

Use FSC-certified paper, which leads to forest conservation

FSC is a certification for responsible forest management and the responsible sourcing of forest products that are environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial, and economically sustainable. Consumers can support the conservation of the world’s forests by purchasing products labeled with the FSC mark. The preservation forests that absorb greenhouse gases (CO2) also contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gases.
